Poem Received for Kevin Pape

“Leaders of Men”

Written to Honor the Service of the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment

In memory of SSG. Kevin M. Pape

Soldiers write history, yes we pay the price

Many miles distant, you live the life…

Entered the Battle of our own free will

out of Duty to Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace

in God, in the flag, in memories of valor

Gone now, our pride and courage you see

“Rangers Lead the Way” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers

We’re still Your Soldiers and we showed the way

Our Lives too short, now pray for the others

Lived Free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service

We’ll always have what some never know

Courage and Honor are our names forever

Lived life with purpose…now our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory

Mission accomplished we fought the Good Fight

Years from now…we’ll tell the full story

until that great Day we will live in the Light

Leaders of Men, we never cower

Furious firefights… always prepared

Rangers move further, faster, fight harder

Tough missions common, all dangers shared

Yes we are your soldiers

Our lives we laid down

Still we guard o’er you

Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will

out of Duty to Country, and we’d do it still

We’ll always have what some never know

Dark clouds one day pass, the sun again show

Congressman Mike Pence on Kevin Pape

“As we departed Bagram Airfield, we walked down an informal plywood hallway lined with photographs of the fallen. On the wall appeared the words, “Some Gave All.” As I glanced at the most recent framed photograph, I stopped in my tracks. There before me was the face of Fort Wayne native, Staff Sgt. Kevin Pape who fell in Afghanistan just one week ago. I snapped a quick photograph of the wall of tribute for his family and marveled at the hushed tone of respect from senior officers as they described how he fought and how he died. While I am not at liberty to discuss the circumstances, I can say Staff Sgt. Pape was a courageous soldier who demonstrated extraordinary valor to the end. Every Hoosier should remember the name and pray for the family of Staff Sgt. Kevin Pape.”
